PASTOR, PHD., MEL LAWRENZE:
God’s Attributes: He Is True
If God were great but not good, he would manipulate, deceive, and just plain lie. But because he is good, he is true and he is truthful. When we say that God is true, it is so much more than saying he is accurate (like a bank statement being true or a newspaper report being precise).
{GOD HAD A PURPOSE!}
Truth as a personal attribute means faithfulness. It means being consistent within oneself, and in harmony with reality. When any of the biblical authors talked about “the true God” they were saying, the Creator of heaven and earth is steady and faithful. He does not change the rules of life. All things hold together as they are “trued” to him who is true. He will always reflect reality to us, and so his words of comfort are not mere sentimental rhetoric, and his words of confrontation are not a sour disposition expressed. There is no one more true than God, ......
{And HE had A purpose!}
It is why Jesus said: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3).
It is all about knowing God. (And HIS purpose,} The last ten devotionals in the Everything New series have focussed on some of the attributes of God (see them all here). They include big words, landmark words: Holiness. Righteousness. Justice. Love. Truth. But they are not mere words, and not just theological bookmarkers.
{This is gods purpose!}
They are themes that rise up out of almost every page of the Bible. They are God’s way of saying to you and to me that he is great, but that he is also good. His moral excellence and purity is who he is. This is why we long for something better in our own lives–to be different from what we are today (more holy), to get things right in life, to receive love and to extend it, to be faithful.
{GOD HAS A PURPOSE!}
God’s majesty alone ought to interest us in knowing him. But it is a good thing if we also pursue him because of his goodness, which is always a picture of how we are to live. That’s what it means to be made in the image of God. Some of his attributes, especially these attributes of goodness, are the intended shape of our human lives. And others, like omniscience and omnipresence and omnipotence, are left to God alone....
( The three OMNI'S are relsted to GOD and GOD only!)
{GODHAS A PURPOSE!}
The most remarkable thing is this: there is a God and he wants us to know him. When we feel discouraged, or wounded, or confused, or lost–God speaks to us. It is equally important for us to know that when life is going well and we have no signifiant problems, we need to connect with God, otherwise pride and self-confidence will be our downfall. At all times and under all circumstances, he is the God who is great and good. And he is the one who says,
“I am making everything new.”
{GOD HAS A PURPOSE!}
If you do not know what that purpose IS, READ YOUR BIBLE!

How Does the Trinity Support the Divinity of Jesus?
Today's reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11
The doctrine of the Trinity is an important cornerstone of Christian belief. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, Paul refers to the deep relationship among the three persons of the Trinity: the Spirit, the Lord (Christ) and God (the Father). He illustrates how unity in the church - in terms of spiritual gifts, kinds of service and kinds of working - should reflect the unity of the Trinity. But how does the relationship among the persons of the Trinity provide evidence of Jesus' divine nature?
Although the term Trinity is never used in the Bible, the early church fathers discerned the concept from verses like Matthew 28:19 2 Corinthians 13:14. In fact, the relationship of the Trinity can be traced throughout Scripture. For instance, consider how all were present at Creation: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth ... the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" (Genesis 1:1-2). And Colossians 1:16 says of the Son, "For in him all things were created."
Yet, as Scriptures like Deuteronomy 6:4 reveal, there is only one God. Although each person of the Trinity is distinct, all share the same essence, or nature.
Philosopher Norman Geisler says that another way to think about the Trinity is as one "What" and three "Whos." Says Geisler: "The three Whos (persons) each share the same What (essence). So God is a unity of essence with a plurality of persons. Each person is different, yet they share a common nature."
As difficult as it is to grasp, the concept of the Trinity verifies the divine status of Jesus. Far from being one of many prophets or religious leaders, Jesus is the very essence of God.

Discovery Exceeds Expectations;
by Dr. Mel Lawrenz
What we can see right now, and is this. Everyone wants to discover something new and fresh. Discovery is intriguing and invigorating. Discovery reminds us that our lives are not over yet, that there is more to life than l of us have yet-undiscovered potential.
In 1804 an expedition commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson set out on one of the greatest voyages of discovery in American history. The known regions of the United States at that time were limited to the geography east of the Mississippi--less than a third of the land mass of U.S. territory. What lay to the west, all the way to the Pacific Ocean, was a vast unknown region. The charge given to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and a few dozen men under their charge was to forge their way west, looking for a water passage all the way to the Pacific for the purpose of commerce.
Eighteen months later, the expedition had failed in that objective. There is, in fact, no waterway connecting the East and West coasts of the U.S.
That is the thing about discovery: You may never find what you expected, but what you end up discovering exceeds all expectations.
The men of the Lewis and Clark expedition were the first citizens of the newly formed country to see the vast plains and to experience their beauty and loneliness, searing heat and savage winter. They were the first to approach the Rocky Mountain range and struggle to cross it and then on to the great Pacific. They discovered countless species of wildlife and came face to face with the people of the great tribes of the West, never knowing whether the encounter would be friendly or hostile. They discovered 179 previously undocumented species of plants and trees. They encountered forty-seven tribal groups including the Pawnees, the Teton Sioux, the Cheyenne, the Tillamook. And then there were the 122 unknown species of animals, fish, and birds. Lewis and Clark tried their best to describe the grizzly bear, the coyote, the harbor seal, the steelhead trout, the prong antelope, the elk-all unknown to people back East.
What the Lewis and Clark expedition discovered was not about trade and triumph, but about the land itself. They set out to discover a means of commerce, they discovered something so much more important.
There is a spiritual analogy here. We need to see our faith as a voyage of discovery. If we think we know everything about God, everything about God's plan for the world, everything about what he wants us to do, then we will live a very limited faith. We will not launch out. We will not take any risks. There is a vastness of God--his nature, his ways, his work done, and his work underway--yet to be discovered. We are explorers.
And we need influencers and leaders who push forward not because of what they know about the future, but because of what they hope for the future.
The book of Ecclesiastes says: "Whatever exists is far off and most profound--who can discover it? So I turned my mind to understand, to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things and to understand the stupidity of wickedness and the madness of folly" (Ecc. 7:24-25).
